We were going to do a 2K10 version of last year’s addy post but then this monster was delivered to our front door. And I don’t think anyone wants to see a shirtless designer in the aftermath of one of Deer Valley’s signature Chocolate Mousse Cakes. We’d show you what the scrumptious layers look like inside but considering it’s been a few minutes since we took this picture, it’s probably too late. But we will give you some tips on how to get a chocolate cake of your very own: partner up with some great clients, create great work for those clients, submit 5 of your pieces to the Addy show, win 6 Addys (one of the pieces was so nice it got double-crowned), get chocolate cake. Sounds good to us.

Winners:

Deer Valley Winter Campaign ‘10: Gold, Judges’ Choice Award

Brandon and I had the opportunity to do a little heli-skiing last year with the Wastach Powderbird Guides at Snowbird, Utah. We lucked out and hit the first blue bird day after a mid winter storm dumped 2+ feet in the Wasatch range. Below are two unedited clips from the day, jump to the flickr set for a few pics.

We used V.I.O Pov 1 helmet camera to capture these shots. Had to say we were a bit disappointed with the white balance and the shear bulk of the camera (requires a long cord w/ battery and display pack). However it made for a great way to capture the trip.

Hopefully once Old Man Winter gets his ass in gear we’ll have some more footage to post!

We’d like to think we had a little something to do with that. Apparently the Gnome seems to think so, he just stopped by our SLC office on his tour of the State.
Destinations are pitted against each other, and fans on Facebook can vote to determine where he gets to go. Utah and Tahoe were the combatants, and the final tally on Wednesday was close. Here was his status update:

“And the winner is……….UTAH! But sweet fancy pickles, was it close. Of 285,482 votes, 142,709 (49.98%) of them went to Tahoe and 142,773 (50.01%) to Utah. Congratulations, Utah! And thanks a billion to all of you for voting. Now let me get packing!”

Our fearless founder, Jason Bangerter, spoke to a inspiring group of students at Skyline High here in the Salt Lake valley last week. This excited group was engaged and had a ton of great questions. We’re constantly impressed with the level of excitement and coming from high school age students in the region. They’re hungry to learn about the industry and we’re more than happy to tell them anything we can about the opportunities out there. Some of these high school students have set their sights pretty high and amazingly enough, many of them have skills to pay the bills too!

PS: Jason swears the administration lady in the blue-grey sweater right, center isn’t asleep. Sure Jason, whatever makes you feel better : )

On Friday Struck and Axiom’s SLC offices joined traditions for the first annual Struck/Axiom Holiday Par-tay at the elegant Cactus & Tropicals. (Shouldn’t it be Cacti & Tropicals? I mean there were more than one cactus there.) It was complete with fancy dining, the traditional Naughty or Nice roast, a prize give-way and a fashion police 911 call. Needless to say, fun was had by all, especially once Tosh and Spencer broke out into their choreographed dance routine.

The other eventful moment of the evening was when @MrRyanGoodwin proved to us why he definitely positively should in fact continue to rock the elf-style side-hair flippy-things. You were right bro, you were right. (And no, oddly enough he isn’t impersonating the statue that happened to be right behind him.)

Adobe MAX offers a multitude of opportunities to learn about the latest Adobe technology offerings and the software development behind tools that are still a central part of the creative ecosystem. This annual event brings with it a great series of classes and lectures, and equally important, brings together creative agencies from around the world to share ideas and discuss common challenges in the SoDA Father’s Lion video Sweet Home Alabama release unConference area.

The biggest announcements this year centered around Flash on mobile devices. One by one, smart phones by Nokia, HTC, Toshiba and Palm were brought out by CTO Kevin Lynch to demo the Flash experience on each device. Despite poor internet connectivity that made for some awkward pauses, it was clear that Flash is going to be a viable mobile technology (especially since it will no longer have to carry around the “Lite” baggage). Hardware support for harnessing GPU processing power, and lower RAM footprint, look to improve the Flash platform in every way.

Also notable, however, was the absence of the iPhone. This absence became even more pronounced when problems, such as the Toshiba’s unresponsive virtual keyboard, occurred. (Whether this was related to the Flash Player or not was unclear—the Palm Pre didn’t have any issues—and, by the way, looks like a great phone.)

Then came the Mythhackers video, a parody of Mythbusters, wherein the intrepid folks at Adobe struggle to get Flash on the iPhone, ultimately to learn that it is now indeed possible, or will be when the next Flash authoring tool becomes available. It will be interesting to see whether the Flex SDK will have the capability to export to the iPhone’s ARM architecture before the next Flash IDE comes out (I still have a hard time with the new Flash nomenclature). However, in many ways, this seems to address a problem no one has complained about, except maybe Flash developers who want to build iPhone applications in ActionScript. Yes, we will be able to run standalone Flash applications on the iPhone, albeit at a significant disadvantage when compared to Objective-C applications. However, the problem of not being able to view Flash Player content on the web is still very much with us, and that is a much bigger issue for Adobe and those of us deploying Flash to an ever-growing iPhone customer base.

Adobe seems to be embracing the capabilities of the new HTML5 standard, and demoed some interesting Dreamweaver/Flash capabilities for publishing to the HTML5 canvas tag (a potential competitor for Flash). It will be interesting to see how the HTML5 video tag will challenge Flash’s ubiquity in the web video space, and whether this changes the discussion around what it means to have Flash on the iPhone.
